Why did you choose Stockton?

I wanted an in-person, supportive environment where I could truly grow. As a first-generation, nontraditional Black male student, I didn’t always believe college was for me. My high school grades didn’t meet Stockton’s initial requirements, so I started at a community college. But after the pandemic, I knew I needed more engagement and community. At Stockton, faculty and staff believed in me, encouraged my voice in class, and gave me space to lead. Stockton helped me prove that higher education is possible at any stage in life.

How did you choose your major?

I chose Social Work because my life experiences led me here. I’ve seen people struggle with addiction, mental health issues and systemic oppression, and I’ve spent much of my career helping others navigate those challenges. I started with hands-on work, but I knew I needed a formal education to elevate my impact. My Social Work studies gave me the theory, policy and practice foundation I needed, and confirmed that this isn’t just a profession for me; it’s a calling.

What opportunities has Stockton provided you?

Stockton has given me countless opportunities to grow as a scholar and servant-leader. I’ve made the Dean’s List every semester, interned with the Dean of Students Office, and participated in large-scale service initiatives like Harvest of Hope, where we collected hundreds of food baskets for neighboring communities in need. Each of these moments helped shape my voice as an advocate and affirmed Stockton as a place where I could lead with purpose.

I’ve taken part in several service-learning courses that took me beyond the classroom and into the community, working with seniors in Atlantic City and with young disabled communities on campus. These are opportunities I likely wouldn’t have found on my own, and they’ve been invaluable to my learning and growth.

What clubs and activities are you involved with?

I served as president of the Social Work Club, where I helped organize advocacy events, professional development opportunities and community service initiatives. I’ve also been involved in leadership workshops, officer trainings and the Empowered Leadership Conference. Additionally, I’ve represented student perspectives in faculty spaces and spoken on panels during Admitted Students Day—especially to encourage first-generation and underrepresented students who need to see themselves reflected in higher education.

What are your career goals?

My goal is to become a licensed clinical social worker and support marginalized communities—especially those facing systemic barriers. I want to bridge the gap between people and the services they need, whether that’s in higher education, mental health, community programs or nonprofit leadership. Longterm, I see myself teaching in higher education, advocating for policies and building programs that promote equity, belonging and access for all.

What advice do you have for students thinking about attending Stockton?

It’s never too late to invest in yourself. If you’re willing to show up, work hard and share your voice, Stockton will meet you where you are and help you grow beyond what you ever imagined.
